Install GarageBand on your internal drive, then create a folder on your external drive called GarageBand. Apple’s GarageBand is a killer app, but it’s also a huge one—between the application and all of its support files (loops, instruments, and so on), we’re talking around 2.5GB of hard drive.

that is what you would do (or just drag the single project to the HD)

the issue is that you are using such an old version of GB, that Logic can't open its projects.

get the latest version of GB (10.2.x), open the project with that, and you'll be asked to save a copy; in your case, save that to your external HD and LPX should be able top open it.

• Apple has released a new update for GarageBand on iOS and iPadOS.
• The update features support for Dark Mode and external drives.
• There's also a new downloadable 'Skyline Heat' sound pack.

Following the release of iOS 13, Apple on Thursday rolled out an update for GarageBand, and you can download it now for iPhone and iPad.

The biggest change in the latest update is support for Dark Mode, which gives GarageBand a sleek new look. It will make putting together tracks late into the night a little easier on the eyes.

The update also introduces the ability to access files from external drives and search for Apple Loops by Sound Library, and more. There's also a new 'Skyline Heat' sound pack.
